Hami is famous worldwide for its Hami melons, but the city's significance to Xinjiang extends far beyond this sweet fruit.  It serves as the eastern gateway for people entering and leaving Xinjiang, and is known as the "throat of the Western Regions" and the "gateway to Xinjiang." Hami is also rich in mineral resources, with high-grade deposits and large reserves. The Tuwu-Yandong copper mining belt has an estimated copper resource of over 10 million metal tons, with 14 copper deposits discovered and proven reserves of 650,000 metal tons.
